Steps for Framing Basement Walls and Stick Build Walls



Summary: Framing of the basement walls are a vital process and requires some skills, as the circumstances and hindrances can make this process a little complicated. So, stick building and improvisation are the key when performing basement wall framing.

Perimeter Basement Wall Framing

Similar to the inner walls, 2”* 4” construction is most suggested for perimeter basement wall framing if you have plans for a cozy basement. Using the studs of this size ensures installation of insulation and hence provides warmth to the area. In case, keeping the place warm is not the most important, and you still have to install drywalls on the basement walls, you can consider attaching furring strips.

The furring strips usually come in the sizes of 2”*2” which you can glue or nail to the solid basement walls.

The best way to install the inner walls is to build them on the ground and raise up to the required height, but as the heights may vary depending on place to place, it is suggested that they be built slightly lower in height and then installed according to the requirement.

If this is not followed, you may experience problems while raising the walls as they would not fit properly between the basement floor and ceiling. Another reason for this is that if the house has been built over clay soil, the level of the floor may vary based on the amount of water present in the lower ground.

In such situations, it is recommended to use the L-shaped steel framing clips to attach the above floor and the walls

This would allow the walls of the basement to accommodate them as per the clay soil and also ensure that they remain in the proper vertical shape.

During the framing process of the basement walls, you might face difficulties and hindrances like the pre-existing ductwork and the pipes and you will be required to work accordingly. So at times, stick build walls may be a more suited option.

Stick Build Framing of Basement Walls

For this process, the foremost need is the nailing of the top-plate perpendicular to the floor joints. The next step is securing a bottom-plate to the walls with the help of concrete nails and adhesives like Liquid Nails. Ensure using pressure treated wood over the bottom-plate as it would be in touch with the floor and might absorb moisture from the ground. Also make sure that both the plates are parallel to each other using a plumbing line. The final step is the installation of the studs along the plates. Normally 2”*4” studs are installed at an equal distance of 16” along the plates. As the distance between the floor and the ceiling may vary, measurement for the location of the studs should be determined before cutting.

Boxing in Ductwork when Framing Basement Walls

If you have plans for installation of interior lights, the ductwork might have to be boxed. For this purpose building Soffits might be needed. As these are not structured, they can be framed using 2”*2” plates like any other wall framing. Two parallel plates can be connected using vertical stud parts. The next step is the nailing of the top-plate perpendicular to the floor joints and securing a bottom-plate to the walls. This follows the installation of the 2”*2” studs at a distance of 16” along the plates. Now, building a similar structure on the other side of the ductwork might be required. After completion of the second wall, install 2” x 2” cross member studs between the two sections of the wall. Using a chalk line to ensure the straightness of the soffit walls would be a wise decision. Measurement for the location of the studs should be determined before cutting because the soffit walls are being stick built.

How to frame the Ceiling

If installation of drywalls over the ceiling is in your plans, then an added wall might be needed. For this follow the similar process like in soffit walls, but in this case 2”*4” straps are used to avoid the existence of the pipes below the floor. In case pipes or wires are not present, you can use the 1”*3” straps at a distance of 16” along the plates.
