Summary: The basic quality of a carpet is based on how it was manufactured: whether the pile was cut, looped or both.

Sixty percent of the carpets sold are cut piled and present a sense of luxury, making them the highly demanded. Even in the cut pile carpets, there are a lot of varieties; one of the most prominent among these is the Saxony. The saxonies have an even surface and its yarns have varying twists.

George Davies, Public Relations Manager of Shaw Industries says that the saxonies come in two looks, the traditional, also called ‘a straight set saxony’, as the yarns are not crimped, and the textured, which are more textured because they have crimped yarns.

He further states that in the past few years, the textured saxonies have also been referred to as “Freize” or “fre-zay” carpets, as they come in rare, nubby and rugged styles with closely twisted yarns.

“Velvet” carpet is another popular type of the cut-pile family. It has a very tight and short pile and is leveled, stable and smooth presenting a formal look. In fact, it is so smooth that it leaves the imprints of your footsteps when you walk over it.

The fibers used while designing the carpet and their twist and gauge are vital features which contribute to the final look and feel of the carpet. All these factors contribute to the end product and its texture.

Tightly twisted yarn is believed to give the best result , as the yarns tend to take their original shape with time and so the more closely knit they are the longer is the life span. Some producers of carpets often use the heat-set method to ensure that the yarn does not loose its shape.

In comparison to the cut pile carpets, the Loop pile carpets have longer life duration as the tips of the yarns are not exposed, as the yarn is worn on the sides and not the ends of the carpet, resulting in automatic twisting of the yarns

The Berbers have finished loops which result in a nubby texture. As a result, a lot of loop piled carpets are now referred to as Berbers, which is a name derived by a nomadic tribe of Africa also named so. You can also consider making use of low level loop, especially for a smoother surface, and this is also used by a lot of commercial establishments.

A combination of both these styles, that is loop pile and cut pile, is also a good option to be considered as it provides an excellent look and is available in a wide range of patterns. Sculptured carpets, also regarded as the traditional types provide a bright and rich look, owing to their bold colors and patterns. There are a lot of other sober versions, some of them which are called “carved saxonies” or “traceries” just refer to the pattern.
