Summary: The common problems in cases of tile flooring is that the grouts crack or get stained or in some case the tile might crack or break.
Although the grout is hard, it is porous and can absorb water and stains if it has not been sealed properly. If the grout is not properly applied, cracks appear in it and eventually the tile gets loosened.
The common cause of tiles breaking or cracking is that either it has an uneven support below it or some heavy object fell on it, causing damage to the tile.
The movement in the underneath support of the tiles is generally the result of minor earthquakes, settling of the house or a weak sub-floor, which does not have the capacity to bear the load.
This deflection does not happen in case the tiles have been installed over slabs, so always make a layer of wood or additional plywood before you install the tiles.
The tiles can be treated with sealers which are moisture resistant, if the tiles are of porous nature and can get affected with stains caused by liquids and food, but the sealers may affect the natural look of the unglazed tile or stone.
As the cracked or broken tiles cannot be repaired, they ill have to be replaced. So always remember to store a few tiles when the installation is in process.
Always follow the instructions provided by the tile manufacturer for the cleaning of the glazed and unglazed tiles respectively. As the grout can be easily stained, immediately remove any dropped food or liquid which may affect it.
