Summary: It's important that you check your chimney before the winter season. This is not that difficult and is really to simple process grab a flashlight and a look inside the chimney for any of the obstructions like leaves a build up of soot and possibly even a bird nest.
When you're doing this inspection looking for any missing are cracked flue tiles, from outside of the roof look for signs of crumbling mortar possibly some loose bricks (or missing) check flashing has not pulled away from the chimney.
It has been a stormy year make sure to check your chimney for cracks, if you happen to live in a country where you may get earthquakes check your chimney for possible cracks if there have been recent tremors.
