Some people consider the steel doors to be ugly and noisy doors as found in many industries. But in most cases the steel doors have a heavy-gauged galvanized steel surface which is coated with wood grain patterns. Some of these may even be coated with wood fiber, and if you have a higher budget, you can always choose the steel doors which are wood laminated over the surfaces.

 
The traditional steel doors come with a coat of primer with an artificial finishing of polyester and may require painting at certain intervals. A few of these are more weather specific and have a coating of vinyl over them to resist bad weather conditions. Most of these also have a frame inside made of wood or steel. High density foam insulation is filled in other recesses of the doors. An insulation value of approximately R-8 has been observed in Weather Shield's insulated steel door which comes with wood lamination over the surfaces.

In comparison to wood and fiberglass doors, the steel doors are quite cheap. You can comfortable get a 3'0" by 6'8" paneled door without glazing or hardware for approximately $100 to $120. The fiberglass entry system can cost you as much as a wooden door after complete finishing. This is so because the cost of other accessories like hardware and glazing cost you the same for both the materials of the door.

A superior quality steel door consists of steel frame of 24-gauge steel. Based on your requirement, you can customize the thickness of the steel as per your requirement. In case you have plans to emboss it with molded wood grain textures, ensure that the pattern matches that of natural wood, which is vertically on the stiles and horizontally on the rails.
