In general, two different indexes to measure the ratings are used by the manufacturers which are HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) for heating and SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) for cooling. These are derived after a lot of experimenting over the model over an entire season.
The minimum required rating approved by the government for heating appliances is 6.85 and cooling appliances is 10.0., but this not necessarily ensure that you are purchasing such models as many dealers may have the older models in stock too.
A SEER of 15.5 is reported for Carrier's Infinity 2000 in comparison to other low efficiency appliances marked with 7.25 and high efficiency appliances which are rated as 13.05. The leader in this segment is Trane’s variable-capacity and high efficiency model which has a rating of 16.9
In comparison to other low efficiency appliances marked with HSPF of 5.3 and high efficiency appliances which are rated as 8.9, Carrier’s model are rated the highest with a rating of 10.0.
