Summary: Read the following section to know about the common leakage issues in shower heads. These leakages occur due to improper sealing of the shower head to the gooseneck pipe hanging from the wall.
Question: I need some help from you regarding the fixing of the leakage in the shower of our bathroom. I replaced the head twice but the problem hasn’t been resolved yet. I've soaked the water filter inside the Shower Massage (thinking it was clogged) and tried both shower heads with and without pipe tape; moreover, I have also tried new washers in both shower heads but all in vain.
I am not sure whether I am right or not; is it because of the pipe or there is something else wrong with the sheet rock inside the wall? Is it possible to fix this leakage myself? Please let me know the essentials for solving this problem.
Answer: There are two main considerations that should always be kept in mind while dealing with the head showers. The protruding pipe attached to the wall has two components; male threads and female threads. These can result in leakage if not sealed properly. So to start with; first see that you seal the male threads using a Teflon tape; giving it firmness. A leakage occur when the male or the female threads are not tightly bound or fixed to each other; hence developing a high pressure. It is advisable to bind it using a pipe threading compound. In your case, it seems that you either have not sealed the male threads using Teflon tape or have not installed the shower head properly.
The problem is quite simple and you can solve it on your own with requiring any external help. A pipe threading compound or a Teflon tape should be sufficient for fixing the problem. If you are using the thread compound, remove the head and apply the thread on the neck. Be careful in handling the goose neck, it might be problematic if dislocated. The other option is to use the Teflon tape.
All you have to do is to peel off a four-inch strip of tape and wrap it around the threads in a clockwise fashion as you look at the end of the pipe. Now displace the shower head in its place. If everything is done fine then hopefully it will not leak any more. If the problem still persists then it means that either the setting is not right or there is a defect in the ball joint of the head. So better take all necessary steps in order to identify the actual cause of the leakage and then go for various ready made solutions.
