More than ever existing utility to serve as a passage to climb the above floor, the staircases have also served as a strong designing element, representing signs of creativity, styles and pattern.

Their unique sense of vertical approach offers the human mind an opportunity to express their feelings in forms of shape and designs. They can be located inside the house or outside, there designing can present a strong expression of ideas.

A lot of styles have been offered in staircases. They may be spiral, circular, straight or any other shape and their width may vary. It is always considered that the climb upstairs in gentle and less tiring if they are wide. The designs of the staircase also depend on other factors like the floor area and the vertical height.

Below are some types of prominent staircases:

* The straight stairs are the ones which are stretched from one level of the house to another. These are considered to be the simplest in terms of construction; however, they may not be suited to all types of floor-plans.

* The return stairs which are divided in between to reverse their direction by 180 degrees at the place of landing.

* The "L" shaped stairs which make a 90-degree turn at the landing.

* The winder staircase is quite similar to the L-shaped stairs and lesser space is required; however, they may not be safe for use as the landing id divided into pie-shaped steps.

* The circular stairs which generally sweep in a broad curve from the lower level to upper level.

* The spiral stairs which twist around a center pole in one of two ways. Generally such stairs have an upright center pole in which the stairs radiate outwards, whereas the helix style stairs have a curve around the center support which follows the sweep twisting of the stairs.
