Summary: A simple fact is that any multistoried house will have at least one staircase in it, which will serve as the vertical passage. Based on the construction material, the methods implied, shape, design, patterns and a number of other factors, a wide variety in staircases can be observed.

The staircase presents a look of style and difference in any house and is a vital part in the layout of the place. There are different kinds of stairs; some may be gradual or steep, wide or narrow, grand and impressive or functional. Some staircases are built by carpenter, craftsmen, or stair-makers and some are produced in factories, transported to the location and then installed by professionals.

The design of the stairs is based on its utility and functions. A wide stairway handling the maximum footing and which is centrally located in the house in a clearly visible place will always be more presentable than the one built to approach the basement of the house.

Whatever type of staircase it may be, the basic assembly would be the same. The look of the staircase and its designs are based on the manner these basic assemblies are put together, to give it an attractive and stylish appearance.

There may be a lot of cases where the stairway is built without any riser that is they have only the treads to carry the person’s footstep. So, it cannot be assumed that all the stairs have all these basic elements.

The basic principles and rules have to be followed while building the stairs to provide safety to the users. These set of rules or the codes are approved by the government and determine the maximum allowed height of risers, the width and depth of the treads, handrails placement, etc.

The most common stairways for areas like the attic or basements, which simply need to be accessed and are not the central stairways of the house, are the spiral stairs.

Some of these are produced in a single piece, whereas others are produced in parts. These are normally made of aluminum, hardwood, steel or any such combination.
