Summary: There are some basic tips to be considered prior to getting the wallpapers dangled. The drywall must be properly smoothened and the wallpaper should be allowed to loosen up before sticking on the wall.

Question: I have completely messed up trying to hang wallpaper. I think it was because as I went through this home improvement episode I watched on TV, I might have missed some crucial points. Now, it has bumps and depressions all around and also dents under the paper which is easily visible. If you can help me with how to get it in place and clear me as to where did I go wrong? Also, I was thinking if there is a simple method of activating the paste on the already pasted wallpaper?

Answer: I can very well understand your concern. While television is a great medium to play with your imagination and capture it, things are not that easy in reality. Yes, these home improvement television shows would make everything look smooth and effortless as if a child’s play. Difficult tasks are simplified within a matter of seconds as if an expert. However, to be one, you would need to keep several important points in mind though it is not an impossible task which could not be done.

From the symptoms you have mentioned, it seems that the wallpaper was not allowed enough time to enlarge on the pasting table. Rather, this was done on the wall leading to the boils and eruptions throughout. Once the paste activator is applied, the wallpaper begins to swell for a considerable time period and then gradually relaxes. It should be rested on the pasting table during this process as installing them in such condition would mean that they expand on the walls. These symptoms occur as the motion is restricted to sideways and out of the wall.

This process is termed as ‘relaxation’ by professionals and might take about five to ten minutes in general. You don’t have to sit and wait till the paper is completely relaxed. You may save out time by managing the steps in a coordinated manner. Start with cutting several paper rolls at the same time. Now, take one roll, apply the paste activator and fold it back on itself. This process is termed ‘booking’ and after some time the paper can be unfolded and is ready to be slinged. Do not hesitate, if you think that the paper will be glued to itself.

Now, repeat the steps with another paper roll and then another. Meanwhile, the first one is kept separately and allowed to relax. You may try out working out with three rolls simultaneously. The first one would have completely relaxed while you are cutting and booking three more. It is ready to be hanged and once done, cut the fourth roll, use the paste activator and follow on while the second roll is ready. You might have noticed that this way you are working with rolls in different stages of relaxation.

The wallpaper not only expands when the paste activator is applied but also shrinks, when dried. Once dried, it will clearly depict the flaws and spots under the sheet of paper. It will reflect the hardened cement granules or paint particles on the wall. Also, the hollowness with cavities and cracks would be visible.

One should make sure to look for these defects before hand and not wait for the shortcomings later. Neatly smoothen the drywall surface using a wide flexible scraper which would whack up the lumps and contusions. A rapid-dry spackling compound can be used to pack the cavities and depressions. Using a light bulb against the wall with defects would easily show even the slightest flaw. It sounds like a lot of hard work and time consuming but the results would be great and the disasters would be less.

The wallpapers in the markets generally come pre-pasted, accompanying them is the manufacturer’s booklet which instructs about how to activate the paste. The emphasis is to use buckets of water and the entire process might be tiring for some. Instead, a better option would be to get a powdered product from the market. When mixed with water for about half an hour, it creates a gel like substance which can be applied to the back of the paper. The best results would be when the walls are properly sized out without any flaws and the gel is applied to the papers. The gel exploits the adhesives to the fullest making them stick to the paper.

Once a paper roll has been installed, it is not an easy task to remove and then recycling is nearly impossible as the paper stripes are gentle and fragile in nature. Even though all measures have been taken, still the drywall would not be 100 percent free of any flaws or imperfections. What can be done here is that first pierce the eruptions to reduce the air pressure and then with the help of a syringe, insert water into the swellings to moisten them. Now, while trying to take out the wallpaper, use a rolling pin or a small wallpaper roller to try to flatten the paper.
